2017 Flinthills High School Veteran's Day Assembly

The annual Flinthills High School Veterans Day Assembly was held on Friday, November 10, 2017 in the Flinthills auditorium.  The celebration started with a procession of the armed services flags to Lee Greenwood’s, “Proud to be an American”.  The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.  Students, Haley Wright and Sarah Hinnen, sang the national anthem.  The President’s Proclamation was then read.

The Elk’s Club holds an annual essay contest for area students.  This year, Flinthills is proud to have not one, but two county winners.  Jared Stopczynski placed second and Amanda Brown placed first in the Butler County contest.  Amanda’s winning essay will be entered in the state-wide contest.

Flinthills students are given the opportunity to visit our nation’s capital every couple of years.  A slide show of the various monuments and sights around Washington D.C. was shown.  Several poems were read throughout the assembly including, “I am a Veteran” by Andrea Brett, “Veteran” by Lynn Carey, and “Just a Common Soldier” by A. Lawrence Vaincourt.

FHS/FMS choir sang “Tribute to the Patriots” composed by Camp Kirkland to honor our veterans.  The song includes clips from the anthems of the five branches of the armed services.  As each anthem was sung, veterans came to the front of the auditorium.  At the conclusion of the song, each veteran in attendance was recognized.   This year, we had 30 veterans and their families in attendance.   This was followed by a slide show of veterans in their uniforms.

A moment of silence was held to remember those that have gone before us.  This was followed by the poem, “Before You Go”,  author unknown.  Taps concluded the program.

If you are a local veteran or would like to be included on our invitation list, please contact the office with your address.  If you have a photo of yourself or a local veteran in uniform, please contact Karen Hinnen at 620-476-2215 ext 1053.  All efforts to utilize all photos will be made for the next slide show.
