Last spring I applied to be an Ambassador for the Lowell Milken ArtEffects program. This program challenges students to research "UnSung Heros" and to create an artwork based on that hero. In an age where so many of our students idolize athletes and celebrities I was intrigued by the concept of this program. The application process was rather lengthy and I was ecstatic to be chosen to participate. I attended several zoom trainings throughout the year, with a final requirement to do a capstone project. I chose to showcase the student artworks at the art show April 16. This was a rewarding experience for both myself and my students. 6th grade students as well as high school art students chose their hero and researched them. Students chose their heros off of a list supplied by ArtEffects. There were a large variety of unsung heroes to choose from; war heroes, civil rights, a variety of STEM leaders, even an animal or two! All of these people changed the lives of those around them or humanity as a whole. After students felt confident that they knew enough about their unsung hero to begin creating they then had the hard decision on what form of art they were going to choose. Students created collages, paintings, drawings, assemblages, altered books, digital artworks and ceramic art, bringing life to their hero. I am so proud of how hard my students worked on this project! While I did not require students to enter the competition portion of this project many are planning on entering for a chance to gain recognition and cash prizes. Michal Austin ~ Art Instructor

This quilt is your quilt. This quilt is my quilt. Made by the primary students, with a little help of course . It shouts by a ticket or buy six tickets. We'll find out on May 5 who's quilt it is. Results are in! I took four new TSA members to compete at State. None had been to a TSA state competition before but approached every competition with 100% effort and with a positive attitude. Our tech bowl team tested high enough to get ranked 7th on the bracket. They battled it out and walked away with a fourth place win. The theme for On-Demand Video was a parody. A cell phone, sunglasses & a roll of Smarties had to be shown in the video and the phrase “What was that?” had to be said. The boys did a lot of brainstorming & came up with a “The Fast and the Foolish” plot which earned them a second place at state! Newell was also recognized by Pitsco at their demonstration for asking great questions and helping others during the hands on demo. Xavier was recognized by Pitsco as well during a different demonstration, and he earned some swag for completing the scavenger hunt! You can view their parody video here: https://www.google.com/url?q=https://youtu.be/WuR0H2GEO-g?si%3D-j_-m8gJureG1Hzm&source=gmail-imap&ust=1744832355000000&usg=AOvVaw1d7u2fpoxcF8p0TG3VjztI
