On October 21st, Mr. Casteel took the seniors on the annual Butler County Government Day field trip hosted by the American Legion Butler County Council and Butler County Government Offices. The day started with a tour of the historic courthouse in downtown El Dorado where students heard presentations from the Public Works Department, Health Department, and Emergency Management Services.
While touring the historic Courthouse, students were also shown the locations of the County Clerk's Office, the office responsible for voter registration and elections, and the Department of Motor Vehicles Office, for driver's licenses, tags, titles, and taxes. In addition, students sat in on a County Commission meeting. A history of Butler County and the Courthouse itself was given. The GIS Mapping Office also gave a brief presentation. The Butler County Commissioner from District 4, which contains both Rosalia and Cassoday, is Darren Jackson. Mr. Jackson even sat with the Flinthills seniors at lunch.
The students also toured the Butler County Judicial Center for a presentation by Butler County Attorney Darren Devinney. Following the tours at the Courthouse and Judicial Center, students then went to the Butler County Community Building for lunch. During lunch, members of the Butler County American Legion held a flag-folding ceremony where they described the significance of a flag-folding and what each of the 13 total Folds symbolize.
After lunch, the students went to the Butler County Detention Center where they were shown various vehicles from the El Dorado Fire Department, Butler County EMS, the Butler County Rescue Squad, and various vehicles from the Butler County Sheriff's Department. To top off the day, the students toured the Butler County Jail. This is a very important day for our soon-to-be graduated, tax-paying, American citizens.
