2016-2017 FAFSA Changes

2016-2017 FAFSA Changes

In a new practice called the "early FAFSA", the U.S. Department of Education (ED) released the 2017-2018 FAFSA on October 1, 2016, rather than waiting until January 1, 2017. This will be ED's practice from this point forward (releasing the FAFSA in October). In addition to the early FAFSA release date, US ED has implemented what is called the "prior prior tax year" practice, in which students are required to report income information on their FAFSA from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017–18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) must report their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information.

Visit https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/about/announcements/fafsa-changes for more information, or see the summary table below.

Please encourage your high school seniors interested in attending college to fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible, as some states offer financial aid on a first-come, first-served basis.
