H1N1 Pandemic Flu Plan

updated 10/14/2009

To: Parents/Guardians of Flinthills Schools
Flinthills School has received notice of its first cases of H1N1 (swine flu). Patients presenting with symptoms in the clinical setting are being diagnosed strictly by symptoms. Due to the increasing numbers of H1N1, laboratory confirmation is only being utilized in hospitalized individuals. As with any infectious disease, the quantity of cases is difficult to estimate as there are countless unreported instances.
Below are signs/symptoms of H1N1:
-Fever of greater than 100 degrees
-Body aches
-Coughing
-Sore throat
-Congestion
-In some cases, vomiting and diarrhea
While this is cause for heightened awareness of flu symptoms, it is not cause for panic. Due to the ongoing possible spread of the H1N1, Flinthills Schools will not be sending out further notifications of cases. Please, if your child is exhibiting any of the above symptoms, it is important to keep your child home from school. Please continue to check the Flinthills website (www.usd492.org) for the pandemic plan and links to health agencies.
Our contact to Butler County Health Department on Monday, October 14th indicated we are not the first district in the county to get significant absences due to the flu. Past experiences indicate that if the school closes, healthy students do not stay home, but go other places where they may contract the flu as precautions may not be as great. The health department’s advice is: healthy students should come to school and sick students should stay home. We expect the same of our staff.
Additionally, we are spraying desks down more frequently during school, provide hand sanitizers, and continually remind students and staff of precautions.
If you have further questions about school procedures, please contact an administrator. If you have further questions about flu symptoms, etc., please contact your health care provider or the county health department.
Thank you.
Bob Diepenbrock,
Flinthills School Superintendent
