FEDERAL STUDENT AID
High school students planning to attend some form of training following high school may receive federal financial aid.   Parents and especially high school seniors and college students need to understand what the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is all about.
The (FAFSA) is a form filled out by the student and their parents, giving the federal government information about the  financial need of the student.  Federal grants and loan programs are awarded based on the information from the (FAFSA).  College financial aid offices may also use this information when awarding college scholarships.  This form may be filed electronically rather than with paper & pencil.  Filing this form is the only way to tell whether or not a student will qualify for various grants and loans.  This information is kept confidential.  Information on the form does include the past years income, etc.  Students and parents should file their income taxes as soon after the 1st of January as possible since this is the information used when filling out the (FAFSA).
Before beginning the (FAFSA), students should apply for a personal identification number (PIN) which is used to sign the electronic form.  This can be done immediately by going to www.pin.ed.gov.
Students may pick up a hard copy of the FAFSA in the high school counselors offices or college financial aid offices.  Anyone wanting more information may contact Don Wedel, counselor,  Flinthills High School,  (620) 476-2215.  Also direct information and to find out more about the (FAFSA) students may go to www.fafsa.ed.gov.
