Are You a "Cool" Parent?
September 21, 2006
Have your kids tried this
argument yet?
“But other parents, like, let their kids have beer at their
parties. You guys are like so last century. All the other parents
are always there to make sure no one gets like really drunk. Why
can’t you be cool like all the other parents?”
Our job as parents is not to be cool. Our job is not to be their
friends or to be product and service providers for our kids. Our
job is to model good behavior. We teach character, responsibility,
honesty, etc. by our example.
So, how do you handle this situation? When they say, “But other
parents do it,” you respond with, “In this house we don’t ask each
other to break the law. Thank you.”
When you let underage kids drink, you send the message that they
can choose which laws they want to obey. It doesn’t take long for
them to decide that they can choose which of your rules to
obey.
Do your kids a favor. Teach them responsible behavior, and don’t
give in. It will pay off in the long run, and in some cases, even
save their lives.
