The Paper Route Saga
September 06, 2006
Timmy lived in a family where money was tight. He wished he could buy some of the things his friends had. His solution was to get a paper route with 120 customers.
It was fun at first, but having to get up at 4:30 every morning became a chore. It was too much like work. So, before long he was sleeping through his alarm.
Mom worried about the customers. She worried about him losing his job. She nagged Timmy without results. Then she turned on her husband. “You are going to have to set your alarm each morning so you can help Timmy. It’s just too hard for him and I don’t want him to lose his job.”
Dad refused, saying, “It’s not my job.” Mom started getting up each morning at 4:30.
Finally Mom figured it out. “Wait a minute. Would it be worse for him to lose his dream job some day for lack of responsibility, or would it be better for him to learn that lesson on a low-paying job at age 15?”
She knew the answer. She called his supervisor and warned him that she didn’t contract for the job and that Timmy was on his own. Wise mom!
